2007-06-09 (dead, silenced)

"Fuck off"...huh, I was an angry little fellow then, I guess. Wink

Seems this is my version of Country Feedback, which I still love. I didn´t mean to

steal, though. Sadly, that means that this one will disappear in some drawer sooner or later.

2007-06-02 (hold those scissors)

This one I wrote today - once again without trying to. Just wanted to try out some new VSTIs in Fruity Loops.

It´s far from being good, but it´s nice when they keep coming easily. Wink

Just one of those meaningless little ditties that come with summer warmth - if this is going to be a song at all, it´s classical filler material.

Really, that´s all I wanted to say with that one! Wink

Written today in about ten minutes and recorded right after that.

No good song I think, but I like the sound of the guitars on this one.

All Birds Between Here And Babel

How pathetic! - But that´s the first line in my notebook that hit my eye when I recorded this one yesterday. The song´s nothing special as well...classical filler.

NAT Demo (02:21)

This one´s from early 2003, March I think. I wish I´d recorded a better demo of this in 2006.

Only recently you were the center of our talk for a minute.

Ornamental Leaves Burning House (02:39)

#2 on the 2006 Christmas single. The mix & the drum track could´ve used some more attention, but I actually like this one. It was written in less than an hour, some weeks before Christmas - under the impression of a TV interview with Boris Blank & some old promo photographs of Alison Goldfrapp. You hear no glam & no Yello, but it´s all in there.

And I came up with the bridge while I was taking a shower; for the first take I was wearing a bathrobe & a Telecaster - a YELLOW bathrobe! Laughing

Eight Sisters Demo (03:40)

The working title for this one was Iceland, and that´s how it still sounds to me: a cold and lonely place, profound sadness...and my keys, first used as a makeshift percussion instrument and then mindlessly dropped on a table while the microphone was still on.

The lyrics are not meant to make any sense, by the way, but they´re not subject to change either.

2007 01 14 (should i write a poem) (03:16)

Written (acoustic guitar, vocals) in the winter of 2000/01.
Additional writing and recording this January.
The book of several generations made its impression on me... - needlessly cryptical, I´m well aware of that. Cool
But if you have read said book, chances are not too bad you´ll understand.

Oh, and my neice said she wanted to hear one of her instruments on one of my songs; the tambourine is hers. Smile

No, it wasn´t Bonnie Tyler who sang that first verse.Laughing

Maybe this is a drop, quality-wise...but you´ve got to get them out of the system before they do any damage.

I should write some lyrics for this one, too...

2007 02 10 (I hope you get my letters) (02:10)

A little poem that has been around for some time. The music was written yesterday, recorded today. It´s a quick version, as usual, almost completely built with first takes. You can hear my clothes rustle and if you listen closely you can even hear me breathing into the microphone (that´s the guitar track, lol).

"Save me!" is not very original for a chorus lyric...I was taking a little break from recording and listening to some songs, Queen´s "Save Me" sounded and I knew I had two words that would fit. I´m probably going to change them sooner or later, I don´t feel the need to be saved right now - maybe in ten minutes? Wink

I also got some new free VST plug-ins today, one of them an emulation of a Teletronix LA-2A comp, which made the mixing an event of almost erotic pleasure. Not that you could hear it. Smile

Ornamental Leaves - Kings (Single Version) (03:11)

2006´s Christmas single. Will be revisited some time soon. The noise and the voice, the mix and whatnot. Also one of those songs written in hardly an hour. This is really fun to play and the lyrics actually mean something.Cool

Syracuse Demo (02:46)

....is breaking a rule. I had meant to make this my journal of 2007, a place to post only newly recorded songs (even though they might have been written years ago), but I´m breaking my own rule this very moment.

The reason? I listened to Syracuse this morning, which reminded me of the hours during which I recorded it. These hours may not have been entirely free of bittersweet tears, but in retrospective they have that golden light of nostalgia to them (think Maxfield Parrish´s paintings...), just like the golden harp I picked out of maybe a thousand, in the dream that inspired the lyrics. Sounds even weirder than usual, huh? Laughing

While it´s not perfect by any means (what did I think when I left those lead vocals in?Undecided), it puts me in a good mood.

2007 02 04 (nationwide scare) (03:48)

I wrote this one today without actually trying to, it just came without asking my permission first, but let me tell you, I can live with that!Wink

There´s more complicated riffs &c., but to quote the divine Frank Black: "Embrace the cliche!". And while it might not be the greatest song, I´ve ever knocked up, the same old three chords still do the trick...

Since this one happened so fast, the lyrics are definitely experimental.  And that chorus made me go out of breath! Yell

Oh yeah, the strings are off too, but you noticed that yourselves, didn´t you?Wink

Gotta cook myself lunch now and enjoy the afternoon sun.

2007 02 01 (one girl and another ) (01:32)

Just a little something I wrote these days, in order to prove it actually IS impossible to do halfway decent vocals when you´re singing and at the same time holding a heavy book with the lyrics you´ve just come up with (and written in there in tiny tiny TINY letters). Oh well.

The rhythm is way off on this one.

This & That vol. I/07

So, last weekend I was terribly ill; but only for half a night and the day after that night, weird, ugly - and over. Why can´t being ill always be like that? I mean, it´s a waste of time to be knocked out for a week when everything (including high fever) can be over in a mere thirty-six hours? I feel like I must die shortly when my temperature rises well over 38°C, so I can do without that for prolonged periods, thank you. You never get those cool feverish dreams and fantasies that people have in movies all the time anyway. I hallucinated about Darth Vader being in my room when I was sick as a child, but that´s not highly original, right?

2007 01 27 (one way down) (02:28)

Written and recorded this morning in kind of a rush. The lyrics were made up in the process and will be worked on.

The thing is completely uncut, most of the instrument tracks are first takes and my voice was terrible this morning, must´ve been snoring during the night. Yell Might also have been the demanding kazoo part...

Though it´s not a masterpiece, I like its mood and the mood writing it put me in. If only I didn´t have commission work for a friend to do! Frown

2007 01 25 and conscience, turned tyrant... (03:02)

I came home late yesterday, cold and bone tired went to bed, almost fell asleep...and then remembered the riff I had told myself not to forget, a week ago. Glad I got up and worked it out; I even booted up the PC and recorded a quick & dirty version (and then went on to sleep like a dead man). The present demo, however, I have recorded this afternoon. There are quite some mistakes strewn all over the song, but who does really tune their guitars, or practice the new riff, or record the vocal tracks after some warm-up singing...or keep track sheets, for that matter? Yup, right: everybody does, except me. Grow up! Tongue out

As for the lyrics, they´re not meant to make sense, just random catchphrases made up for the occasion. What´s important is in the chorus, just like it ought to be. Wink

Don´t let conscience grab passion by the throat.

2007 01 02 (Quit If You Don't) (02:09)

Again something old that´s been recorded only recently. I wrote this one (acoustic guitar & lead vocals) when I was around nineteen and in a terrible state of mind, does it show? I´m inclined to think it does.

I had plenty of time on the day I recorded the demo, yet it doesn´t sound very sophisticated; my voice was struggling, too...

2007 01 19 Shining Tree Grows Again (03:46)

I wrote this one yesterday night. How good I wasn´t too lazy to get up from the ottoman on which I´d resided, reclining, in pale but radiant beauty...umm, nope, not really.Tongue out

Today (is there a better way of spending one´s birthday?) I made a couple of additions and programmed a simple drum track. As usual almost every track is a first take and it´s just a very very rough, open-ended demo, but It has its qualities, IMHO.

Enjoy!

The lyrics are about, well...

Christmas Present

Since this place is going to be a tad more personal in 2007, I thought I might add...surprise, surprise!...my favourite Christmas present. It's a pastel painting done by my penpal H. and shows horror & weird fiction writer HP Lovecraft (1890-1937). I am so amazed at the sheer amount of talent she possesses, let alone her love of detail and wealth of ideas.

2007 01 03 Giant Sky (02:05)

A fresh start into the new year - with (you guessed it) just a demo! Cool But I´ve been a prolific little ant and not a lazy grasshopper in the still young 2007. To quote Mr. McCartney: "You just wait!".

The lyrics for this one have been around for some years.

The riff came quickly and the melody had somehow been there with the words for all those years. I´ll be working on a new and final version soon.

And let's not forget the usual disclaimer: Most tracks are first takes that I made up as I went, no singing practice on that day, careless pronunciation, just a "musical post-it note" to myself, yada yada yada.Undecided

Tongue out

Know The Name Of Your Leaf

"Leaves haven't got their names on them! Yet you must know the name of your leaf or these books won't tell you a thing about it. They won't say a word until you first say the name -- and that's the very thing you don't know!"
